The age of our moral vocabulary
Kant grounded autonomy long before genome editing. Now we have to decide how to protect the interests of people whose birth and heredity depend on someone else’s decision. Old philosophy supplies the principles; the new capability requires their application to be justified.
Claim
Some moral principles are older than contemporary genetic technology, but applied ethics has continued to develop them. The age of a principle does not by itself measure a civilizational gap: for heritable genome editing one has to investigate separately where exactly the existing rules fall short.

Method
- We take one chain: autonomy as a philosophical principle, the rules for research involving human subjects, the ethical documents on the genome, and the CRISPR-Cas9 experiments. We date specific publications rather than dating concepts by the years their authors died.
- We distinguish the formulation of a principle, its applied refinement, and a technical demonstration. Cutting DNA in a biochemical experiment, editing living cells, and applying this to the birth of a human being are different capabilities.
- We check not only how old the principles are but also how they have been updated. After the chronology we ask a separate question: what answer does the new practice require, and does existing ethics genuinely fail to give it?

1785 — the philosophical principle
In the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals Kant treats the autonomy of the will as the principle of morality. This is a documented part of the intellectual inheritance, but not a ready protocol of informed consent to genetic intervention.

1979 — the applied refinement
The Belmont Report formulates respect for persons, beneficence and justice, and ties them to informed consent, the assessment of risks and benefits, and the selection of subjects. It explicitly acknowledges that these principles do not always resolve particular ethical disputes.

1997 — ethics before CRISPR
The UNESCO Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights already contains rules on consent and on the assessment of risks of genetic intervention in article 5. Article 24 names germline intervention among the practices that could be contrary to human dignity and require consideration. This is an example of heritable intervention being thought through before CRISPR-Cas9 appeared.

2012–2013 — distinct technical steps
In 2012 Martin Jinek and co-authors showed programmable, RNA-guided DNA cleavage using Cas9. In 2013 Le Cong and co-authors demonstrated genome editing in human and mouse cells. Neither of these works established the safety of heritable editing in humans.

2015 — the intergenerational task
The organising committee of the international summit on gene editing named explicitly the duty to consider future generations and the difficulty of predicting heritable consequences. In its statement, the conditions for clinical application were the resolution of safety and efficacy questions and broad societal consensus. This is ethical work developing in response to a concrete capability.
Limits
- The selection shows one line of development in ethics and technology. It does not determine «the age of all moral vocabulary» and does not measure what share of contemporary decisions Kant or other classics explain.
- Chronological distance shows neither that a principle is unusable nor that applying it does harm. That requires a concrete case in which a missing concept can be told apart from missing data, disagreement about values, or simple non-compliance with an existing norm.
- The impossibility of obtaining consent from a future person did not arise with gene editing. To justify the need for a new category, one has to show what existing approaches to reproduction, representation of interests and intergenerational justice fail to take into account.
- The documents cited record positions as of their dates of publication. They are not a survey of the present state of the rules, nor evidence that those rules were followed in practice.
Conclusion
Old principles do enter the new ethics, but moral work did not stop in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. For synchronism the object of study is the passage from a general principle to a justified decision: who represents the interests of descendants, which consequences matter, and what we do not know about them. Calling this a critical civilizational gap is permissible only after the existing answers have been tested. A convincing application of an existing principle to such a case would remove the need for a new category; a demonstration of its insufficiency would strengthen that need.
