These are not four news items. They are one phenomenon.

The distance between what we are already able to do and how well we understand it is what we call the capability–understanding gap. It is not everywhere, and not everywhere equally important. What interests us are the cases where missing understanding is already holding back further development, or making decisions more expensive than they needed to be.

We do not want to slow progress down. We want the rest of civilisation to finally learn to keep up with it — and then to accelerate together with it.

Synchronism begins in enthusiasm, not in anxiety. Artificial intelligence, genome editing, engineered bodies, radical life extension — all of it is good news to us, and we want there to be more of it.

The issue is elsewhere. For producing capability humanity has built a powerful machine: universities, markets, venture capital, corporate laboratories. Consciousness, morality, personhood and institutions are studied too — and have been for a long time — but at a scale incommensurate with what that study has to serve. One flies; the other goes on foot.

What we need is a second machine of the same ambition, not a brake on the first.

This is not a one-off catch-up campaign. Today it is philosophy, ethics and neuroscience that go on foot. In a hundred years it will be something else we cannot name now — which is why what is needed is a standing mechanism of search, not a deadline.

Where the idea came from

It started with a conversation about Stoicism and Epicureanism. Inner resilience can go together with attention to friendship, curiosity, tranquillity and freedom from needless suffering.

From there a wider question arose: how does a good human life connect to the development of a civilisation increasingly able to change itself?

Synchronism grew out of the search for such a frame. Its central proposal is to make the detection of gaps, the work on them and the checking of results a standing part of development.

What makes a system a bearer of experience. What preserves a person when the body becomes changeable. How to describe attraction once morphology is separable from the person. What family is needed at a hundred and fifty years of life. Every one of these is already being worked on — in philosophy of mind, in ethics, in theories of personhood. Almost none of that work reaches the people who decide about the technologies themselves.

A young engineer sees a comprehensible trajectory: education, laboratory, budget, influence. Someone who spent years on philosophy of mind or moral philosophy sees no such trajectory — although it is precisely their toolkit that is needed where unresolved questions are densest.

We consider this one of the most expensive mistakes in how attention is currently distributed. Every page of the corpus names its own next step, and that step can be proposed, tested or challenged.
